Long description

CUSMA compliance for Atlantic Canadian exporters

Here’s why it matters

Despite recent announcements, Canadian exporters can still benefit from duty-free access to U.S. markets.

In fact, 99.9% of bilateral trade with the U.S. is eligible for duty-free access, but to benefit you must be CUSMA compliant.

How to get there:

  1. Find your Harmonized System (HS) Code
Your product’s classification determines its rule of origin.
  2. Check the Rules of Origin
Confirm if your product qualifies under CUSMA, based on its HS code.
  3. Complete a Certification of Origin
Use a template certificate, invoice or other sales document.
  4. Share the Certificate with your U.S. importer
This will allow them to take possession without paying tariffs.
  5. Need more certainty?
Request an advance ruling from U.S. Customs.
  6. Get support from a Customs Broker
Find a U.S. Customs Broker, or a Canadian Customs Broker.

Remember: U.S. Customs and Border Protection makes the final decisions on classification and tariffs.
