Commissioner's update for correctional employees: May 13, 2024
This content is a message to Correctional Service Canada (CSC) staff from CSC's Commissioner.
Our Mission: The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.
Today and tomorrow, I am at the United Nations headquarters in New York with Assistant Commissioner Kirstan Gagnon to meet Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations. This will be an opportunity to discuss the correctional aspects of peacekeeping around the world and promote the important and hard work you do.
The Service plays an important leadership role on the international stage and other countries look to you as examples of excellence. I will share more details about how our meetings went in my message next week.

Faces of CSC
Ronda Canfield is a Correctional Officer at Dorchester Penitentary in New Brunswick. She talks about the pride she has wearing the CSC uniform and how she feels she is helping change lives. Watch the Lift Me Up video where Ronda explains how she helps offenders choose to see a different way to live.
Victims and Survivors of Crime Week
From May 12 to 18, Canada honours the courage and resilience of victims of crime during Victims and Survivors of Crime Week. The week aims to raise public awareness of the issues victims of crime face and the services available to them.

I am proud that CSC provides services to over 8,700 registered victims and survivors of crime.
Daily, our victim services officers assist victims by:
- providing information to victims about offenders
- bringing forward their concerns about offender transfers and conditional release
- explaining the federal corrections and conditional release system
- referring them to other victim services and agencies.
Our organization helps protect victims and their families and, by doing so, it contributes to safer and stronger communities. I wish to thank all staff for their efforts to support victims, especially our victim services officers who assist victims and survivors of crime every day.
