Chapter 3 - Medical Assessments

A-MD-154-000/FP-000

A complete medical examination is necessary to assess the medical fitness of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel. This is particularly important when subsequent restrictions may limit members’ career options.

The CAF conducts individualized, risk-related periodic health assessments (PHAs) which are administered at regular intervals. The system is designed to accommodate the requirement to ensure that CAF personnel are medically fit for military duties. Therefore, in addition to reviewing overall health and planning preventive health care, the PHA is used to assess occupational fitness. This applies to cases where the occupation requires specific modifications to the standard PHA format (e.g., aircrew or divers) as well as cases where a specific medical condition may require assignment of Medical Employment Limitations (MELs).

This chapter deals with the conduct of standard PHAs as well as occupation-specific assessments, operational and training-related assessments and assessments required for duty outside of Canada (OUTCAN) and in isolated locations.
