Annex A – Application Strategy Map

The Application Strategy Map is a diagram depicting three major sections of this document that are key to the strategy. They are:

  • Strategic Drivers,
  • Strategic Objectives and
  • Core Activities.

The Strategic Drivers box on the left side of the diagram includes four drivers:

  • GC IT Strategic Plan
  • Defence Plan
  • Defence Renewal, and
  • Technological Environment (Gartner Report)

The middle box identifies six Core Activities. These are:

  • Refine Application Governance
  • Mature the Use of Enterprise Architecture
  • Increase Application Development Agility
  • Enable Application Integration
  • Mature APM Data and Processes, and
  • Pursue Partnerships with External Service Providers.

The box on the right includes these five Strategic Objectives:

  • Increase Adoption of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) Applications,
  • Reduce Duplication of Functionality,
  • Reduce Integration Complexity,
  • Improve Application Portfolio Management (APM) Data Quality, and
  • Leverage External Expertise and Services.

Finally, the diagram shows a number of relationships from the Core Activities to the Strategic Objectives. These include:

  • The group of these three Core Activities:
    • Refine Application Governance,
    • Mature the Use of Enterprise Architecture, and
    • Increase Application Development Agility.
  • to a group of two Strategic Objectives that include:
    • Increase Adoption of COTS Applications, and
    • Reduce Duplication of Functionality
  • There is a relation from the Enable Application Integration Core Activity to the Reduce Integration Complexity Strategic Objective.
  • There is a relation from the Mature APM Data and Processes Core Activity to the Improve APM Data Quality Strategic Objective, and finally,
  • There is a relation from the Pursue Partnerships with External Service Providers Core Activity to the Leverage External Expertise and Services Strategic Objective.
