- Cabinet Committee on Canada-U.S. Relations and National Security (TBC): It is expected that the Committee will continue to meet on a weekly basis to discuss critical Canada-U.S. issues. Time, location and topics for future meetings to be confirmed.
Parliamentary affairs
- A new Parliament is scheduled to begin on 26 May 2025 (date determined at the dissolution of Parliament) and a Speech from the Throne will be delivered by His Majesty King Charles III on 27 May, in the Senate Chamber. The Speech can subsequently be debated for up to six days in the House, but these days do not need to occur consecutively.
- It is further expected that the tabling, and subsequent debate, of the Budget and Main Estimates will be prioritized in the early days of the 45th Parliament. At this time, the number of Opposition Days for the supply period ending 23 June 2025 remains to be confirmed.
- The 2024 CAF Pension Plan Annual Report, alongside an update to the 2023 CAF Pension Plan Annual Report, are required to be tabled at the end of every Fiscal Year. As this was not possible for Fiscal Year 2024-25 due to dissolution, these will need to be tabled as soon as possible.
- Additionally, once received by the Minister, the following annual reports must be tabled on any of the first fifteen days on which the House is sitting. This could include the following reports:
- Military Police Complaints Commission Annual Report;
- Military Grievance External Review Committee Annual Report; and
- Chief of the Defence Staff Annual Report on Sex Offender Registry.
- Finally, all committees must be reconstituted at the beginning of the new Parliament and their first item of business will be the election of Chairs and Vice-Chairs. All previous orders of reference expire, and the Government is no longer required to provide responses to committee reports.
- Of note, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (PACP) has traditionally – as one of its first orders of business – adopted a motion to reinstate business from the previous session of Parliament. As such, it is anticipated that four annual updates could be due to PACP within the first 90 days.
- This includes an update on the progress of the Automatic Identification Technology Initiative, two updates on Canada’s Fighter Force and one update on the Justice Administration and Information Management System.
