June 18: Twitter Update from the Deputy Minister Jody Thomas

June 22, 2021 – Defence Stories

Friday update: We are more than this moment. Our institutional flaws are real and we’re dealing with them. But this does not devalue your important and dedicated work—whether you’re in uniform or a public service employee. Your service matters, and you matter.

The period of change we’re working through can feel deeply uncomfortable. At the same time, strong, valuable and important work is still happening, every day. Defence Team: I see you, I see your efforts, and I’m so profoundly grateful. Thank you.

Managers: Recognition can takes many forms and there are many different options to show employees they’re appreciated. The Long Service Award is a great way to recognize dedicated service over time. More here: Recognizing the National Defence Long Service Awards Program.

Not every employee is comfortable with bells and whistles. Simply showing someone their work matters, and making the effort to give feedback, helps folks grow and improve. It also helps folks feel seen and like they’re worth investing in.

Have you looked at the Virtual Shoutout Board set up for #NPSW? Honestly, it’s a feel-good read and shows just a snapshot of the work and effort of different teammates, across the country, every day: Defence Team “Virtual Shout-Out” Bulletin Board: National Public Service Week Edition.

Feedback’s important, especially for people early in their careers. This week, Senior Associate DM @NancyChahwan welcomed our #DefenceTeam summer students. Got a student on your team? Welcome them and help them learn from you.
