As part of Operation REASSURANCE, the Air Task Force – Cobra Warrior 25-2 detachment benefits from essential moral and spiritual support. Thanks to the rapid deployment of Captain (Capt) David Castonguay, the chaplain from 2 Wing Bagotville, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) expeditionary air wing gained a valuable asset that enhances the detachment’s overall capabilities.

Capt Castonguay joined the detachment in the early stages of the operation, providing a constant and reassuring presence to personnel. His role goes far beyond religious duties: he serves as a pillar of psychological well-being, offering a listening ear, guidance, and support during moments of stress, uncertainty, or isolation.

His commitment was also demonstrated through the coordination of community activities, allowing military personnel to engage locally and strengthen ties with the host population. Thanks to his initiative, members took part in a commemorative “Bomber Command” ceremony as part of the Battle of Britain, as well as other meaningful events, reflecting the RCAF’s values of service and solidarity.

“As a chaplain, my primary role is to remain actively engaged with the members, whether on the tarmac with technicians and pilots or in offices, to connect with them and take the pulse of the unit,” said Capt Castonguay. “In an operational environment, the fast pace and challenges faced by spouses at home can sometimes become issues, especially if they’re left unaddressed from the start.”

“My goal is to create a safe space where everyone feels heard, respected, and supported without judgment and in full confidentiality. When trust is established, it often helps defuse potential crises and put measures in place both during deployment and at home, through the various resources available to military families, such as the chain of command, chaplaincy, and Military Family Resource Centres.”

The services and dedication of Capt Castonguay in supporting the members deployed on this mission is also emphasized by the Air Task Force Deputy Aircraft Servicing Officer, Master Warrant Officer Réjean Lalancette:

“Faced with long working hours, complex family situations, and at times personal difficulties, the performance of personnel could be challenged,” he explained. “Through concrete actions and genuine care, Capt Castonguay integrated seamlessly into the teams and built strong relationships of trust, enabling the provision of invaluable support to the members. His humanity and attentive listening greatly contributed to the well-being of the personnel, making him an indispensable factor in the success of the operations.”

Capt Castonguay’s work perfectly illustrates the strategic role of military chaplains in expeditionary operations. By promoting moral well-being, strengthening human connections, and embodying the core values of the RCAF, he contributes not only to the overall success of the mission but also to the long-term health of deployed personnel. His presence is a reminder that behind every uniform is a person and caring for that person is essential to operational effectiveness.
