Restorative Engagement on Systemic Racism
On this page
The Sexual Misconduct Support and Resource Centre (SMSRC) was identified and entrusted with designing and implementing RE on Systemic Racism.
While restorative approaches can be applied to many types of harm, the SMSRC recognizes the unique causes and impacts of racism and discrimination and will be designing RE specific to the Systemic Racism Class Action using an anti-racism and anti-oppression lens.
About Restorative Engagement
Restorative Engagement (RE) on Systemic Racism is mandated by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Systemic Racism Class Action Final Settlement.
It:
- Provides class members with opportunities where they are supported to share their experiences, impacts and insights of racial discrimination and racial harassment.
- Creates opportunities for representatives of the CAF to acknowledge, understand, and learn from class members’ experiences of racial discrimination and racial harassment, and take responsibility on behalf of the institution, for its causes and responses.
- Supports class members and CAF representatives to identify lessons learned and to take action to contribute to broader CAF culture evolution efforts.
- Uses a restorative approach as a response to harm, and as a way to build an inclusive and respectful institutional culture now and into the future.
Restorative Engagement processes will be facilitated by restorative practitioners who are trained in restorative approaches using an anti-racism and anti-oppression lens. Class members will be able to choose to participate individually or in groups.
Family members and support individuals, such as a partner or a relative, can attend Restorative Engagement processes. Support persons will need to attend all the activities required to prepare for the RE process and sign the associated agreement to participate forms.
