3. Definitions
- Leadership Appointment.
- A leadership appointment is a specific long-term practical leadership opportunity in which cadets are responsible for leading and mentoring a set team of cadets, outside their peer group, to accomplish a specific duty or task. Leadership appointments are separated into tiers, based on what rank is suitable to fill each appointment.
4. Policy
Context
- 4.1 Pursuant to Chief of Defence Staff Directive on Canadian Armed Forces Command and Control of the Canadian Cadet Organizations and the Cadet Organizations Administration and Training Service Reserve Force Sub-Component, dated 2 February 2018, the Comd CJCR Gp is responsible for establishing promotion criteria for cadets.
- 4.2 Specific criteria for promotion have been established to ensure that:
- all cadets who receive a rank promotion possess the same basic qualifications and similar experiences;
- merit and the successful completion of corps/squadron training serve as the common standard on which all cadets are evaluated; and
- every cadet is given equal opportunity to advance.
Policy
- 4.3 A cadet may be promoted to the next rank when:
- they meet the promotion criteria as detailed in Section 6; and
- they receive the CO’s recommendation having demonstrated the potential to accept greater responsibility, apply sound decision-making skills, and have demonstrated the leadership skills required of the next rank.
5. Cadet Rank Standardized Terminology
- 5.1 The standardized terminology for cadet ranks and abbreviations are as follows:
- 5.2 Alternate rank terminology may be used by corps/squadrons to reflect terminology used by their affiliated unit. The use of alternate rank terminology must be approved by the RCSU CO.
- 5.3 Alternate terminology may only be used during cadet activities conducted at the corps/squadron. While participating in an Area Directed Activity, Regional Directed Activity, or National Directed Activity, cadets will be addressed using the standardized terminology.
- 5.4 CJCR Gp correspondence, such as policies, instructions, Fortress, and forms, will use the standardized terminology.

Alternate Rank Terminology
6. Rank Promotion Criteria
- 6.1. To promote a cadet to the next rank, they must meet the following criteria:
- 6.2. The calculation of previous time in rank is based on calendar year and will include the summer months.
- 6.3. The corps/squadron CO will conduct a selection board in accordance with CJCR Gp O 5002-6, Cadet Selection Process, in order to select a cadet for a leadership appointment as outlined in CJCR Gp Instr 50-55, Corps/Squadron Leadership Appointments.
