Onboarding students at ESDC

New students

Welcome to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)! We’re here to support and encourage you, so that you can develop the skills and experience needed to succeed in your new role. As students, you contribute greatly to the public service by bringing your energy, creativity and unique ideas. You help us better serve Canadians.

ESDC strives to enhance your personal and professional development. We provide you with meaningful work, clear expectations and regular feedback on your performance. You're an important member of our team, and we value your work, thoughts and opinions. To support you as you begin your new role, we’re providing you with a few resources available before your official start with ESDC. These resources will help you better understand your new work environment and role as a student at ESDC.

The Student Network at ESDC

The Student Network welcomes and integrates students into the department so they can enjoy a rewarding work experience.

The Student Network is here to:

  • Welcome and integrate you into ESDC;
  • Support you and answer your questions;
  • Inform you of the various student networking opportunities available; and,
  • Promote and organize a variety of student activities.

If you need help, go ahead and contact The Student Network or your supervisor/manager.

Pre-arrival

In the coming days, your supervisor/manager should give you more details about your tasks during your work experience. Use this chance to ask questions and seek support if needed.

  • Before you start your employment at ESDC, please make sure that you take the time to review the pre-arrival checklist on the ESDC Onboarding page. It will prepare you for your first day of work.
  • Make sure that you have signed and returned all of the required Human Resources (HR) paperwork (your letter of offer, etc.) to your supervisor/manager, HR or both.
  • Review the Terms and Conditions of Employment for Students and the Student Rates of Pay.
  • Stay in regular contact with your supervisor/manager, especially if there is a long period between the job offer and the start date.
  • If you need to go into the office to pick up any information technology (IT) equipment, find out what COVID-19 protocols are in place to access the workplace.

First day

  • Set up a daily communication routine with your supervisor/manager. Familiarize yourself with the communication platforms like Outlook and MS Teams.
  • Research The Student Network at ESDC and the GC Students Network.
  • If you don't have access to the department network and you need help, contact The Student Network or your supervisor/manager.

Once you have access to the department network, your supervisor/manager or a representative from The Student Network will give you more directions for your onboarding.
