Statements
March 11, 2017 Gatineau, Quebec Employment and Social Development Canada
The Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, today issued the following statement:
“I am proud to mark the anniversary of Canada’s ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The Convention plays an important role in ensuring people with disabilities have equal opportunities in their communities and workplaces.
When Canada ratified the Convention in 2010, we made a commitment to promote, protect and ensure the equal enjoyment of all human rights by people with disabilities.
This year, Canada is considering accession to the Optional Protocol to the Convention. The Optional Protocol gives people with disabilities a new safeguard for their rights by establishing procedures aimed at strengthening the implementation and monitoring of the Convention.
We’ve made great strides in promoting equality for people with disabilities, and there is still much work to do. I believe that all Canadians should have the chance to reach their potential, whether or not they have a disability.
That is why I am honoured to be leading the development of planned legislation to transform how the Government of Canada addresses accessibility and remove barriers so that Canadians with disabilities can be full participants in society.
Join me in celebrating this important anniversary as we continue to embrace a culture that supports a truly Accessible Canada.”
