Government of Canada invests in projects that support seniors in Ontario

Through the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), the Government of Canada continues to meet the needs of Canadian seniors by supporting projects that help increase social participation, and keep seniors active and informed in their communities.

On April 26, 2019, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Seniors, concluded a visit to Eastern and Central Ontario where she met with organizations in the region that have been approved for funding through the NHSP in 2019.

The Minister visited the following NHSP recipient organizations:

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110 - $25,000

Through their project, Caring, Cooking, and Comradeship, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110 in Trenton, Ontario will form support networks for seniors by offering weekly get-togethers where they will take part in cooking lessons and meal planning activities and learn sign language.

Dress for Success Orillia and Barrie - $13,000

Recognizing the valuable contributions and skills of seniors, Dress for Success Orillia and Barrie will recruit and train senior women as mentors for their Professional Women’s Group Program where they will provide workshops and one-on-one mentoring to help empower women in the community.

The City of Orillia - $25,000

Through the Seniors at Play Program, the City of Orillia will purchase equipment such as carpets for carpet bowling, a karaoke machine and a Wii Fit Sports to create a senior-focused space for programming to foster active participation of older adults in the community.

YWCA of Muskoka - $15,650

Through their Aging Artfully program, the YWCA of Muskoka in Bracebridge will coordinate theatre workshops, fraud prevention workshops, and drumming circle sessions to provide more opportunities for seniors to connect and be active and informed in their community.

Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care - $25,000

Through their project, Dance Beyond Limits, the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care in Scarborough will recruit a team of senior volunteers to participate in ballroom dance classes. This program will enhance social participation and encourage active lifestyles for seniors of various abilities.

Markham African Caribbean Canadian Association - $25,000

The Markham African Caribbean Canadian Association will purchase laptops to coordinate and deliver a day program for seniors. The program will include art and technology workshops, encouraging the social participation of seniors while having a positive impact on their overall well-being.
