Black-led Philanthropic Endowment Fund
Through Budget 2021, we created the $200 million Black-led Philanthropic Endowment Fund (the fund). The fund is a long-term source of funding for charities and non-profit organizations in Canada that are:
- Black-led
- Black-focused
- Black-serving
This work is part of our efforts to:
- reduce anti-Black racism
- improve social and economic outcomes in Black communities
In February 2023, we had entered into negotiations with the Foundation for Black Communities to administer the fund. The agreement was signed in March 2023. They are investing the fund and using income earned on the investment to support eligible organizations.
The Foundation for Black Communities is an organization that:
- operates across Canada
- is led by Black people
- focuses on serving Black people
- gives money to other Black-led and Black-serving organizations so they can make a difference in their communities
Organizations can apply for funding through calls for proposals. The first call for proposals is called the Black Ideas Grant: Bridge and Build 2023. It launched on December 18, 2023, and closed on February 1, 2024. The second call for proposals was launched on October 1, 2024, and closed on November 8, 2024.
