About the Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative
Provide up to $25 million over 5 years to help organizations work better for Black Canadians.
Objectives
- To support research and give advice to leaders within a Black Canadian context
- Provide funds to improve workplaces and local spaces
- Provide funds to build a national web to help Black led not for profit organizations
- Provide funds for new priorities for Black Canadians
External Reference Group
The External Reference Group will provide advice to the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development on:
- promoting the inclusion of Black community organizations
- targeting barriers to the full participation of Black Canadians in Canada
- sharing knowledge and expertise on anti-Black racism issues in Canada
- new and current issues affecting Black Canadians and communities
The Reference Group will also support work by the Government of Canada on issues related to the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent (UNDPAD).

The National Institute for People of African Descent
The mandate of the institute is to work on issues that affect Black Canadian communities. The objectives of the institute are to:
- inform and influence policy and program development of all orders of government from a Black-centric perspective
- undertake applied research, knowledge development, information sharing, stakeholder engagement and network-building
- serve to improve social and economic outcomes for Canada’s people of African descent, and their communities
