Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative
The Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI) provides funding to build capacity in:
- Black-led
- Black-serving, and
- Black-focused organizations
It supports projects that reduce systemic barriers and inequities faced by Black communities in Canada.

National Funders Network
Formed in 2020, the National Funders Network consists of high-capacity Black-led organizations from across Canada. The National Funders use their on-the-ground expert knowledge to distribute funds to local organizations. This network ensures that Black-led organizations make investment decisions in a way that best serves Black communities.
The National Funders Network has been allocated an additional $21.5 million in a third round of funding. In the previous 2 rounds, the National Funders collectively awarded $50 million in grants to a total of 939 projects across Canada.
The current network of National Funders consists of:
- Tropicana Community Services (Toronto)
- Black Business Initiative (Halifax)
- Groupe 3737 (Montreal)
- Africa Centre (Edmonton)
Black-led and Black-serving organizations are encouraged to reach out to the national funder in their respective regions.
External Reference Group
The External Reference Group (ERG) provides advice to the Minister responsible for diversity and inclusion about supporting Black Canadian communities.

United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent
The United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent focuses on addressing the challenges experienced by individuals and communities of African descent.

Black-led Philanthropic Endowment Fund
The Black-led Philanthropic Endowment Fund is a long-term source of funding for charities and non-profit organizations in Canada.

National Institute for People of African Descent
More information on the National Institute for People of African Descent will be provided at a later date.
The mandate of the Institute will be to work on issues that affect Black communities. Objectives of the Institute include the following:
- inform and influence policy and the creation of programs of all orders of government from a Black-centric perspective
- undertake applied research, collecting and analysing knowledge, information sharing, engaging with communities and building networks and connections, and
- serve to improve overall outcomes for Canada’s people of African descent, and their communities
