Discover our Climate Competitiveness Strategy
A greener Canada, a stronger economy
Canada isn't just pretty, it's powerful. Our climate strategy is a plan to unlock that power by investing in practical solutions and world-class energy projects. Because a more sustainable Canada is a stronger and more affordable Canada.

Building a better future for all Canadians
We are investing in clean growth, a resilient economy, and lower energy costs for Canadians.
Climate action helps to:
- create jobs and grow Canada's economy
- protect our health and environment
- help families and businesses save money
- meet growing demand for low-carbon energy and products
- make life more affordable for Canadians
- reduce the rising costs of climate change (more than $37 billion since 2015)
Now is the time to act.

Clean and affordable energy
Invest in reliable, clean energy so families and businesses have stable and affordable power.

A competitive economy
Support good jobs and new investment across Canada.

Support for Canadians
Help people use clean technologies at home and on the go.
Canada’s current actions and progress

Clean industries
We are investing in clean technology and worker training to support good jobs across Canada. These investments will help more Canadians build careers in growing low-carbon industries.
- Canada’s clean tech sector supports over 350,000 jobs and is expected to grow
- By 2050, clean jobs could reach 1.5 million
- Companies like LG Energy Solutions and Volkswagen are building major electric vehicle (EV) battery plants in Ontario
- Creating thousands of new jobs

Grid modernization
Federal investments are making electricity more reliable and affordable across the Maritimes, so more families have access to clean energy
- Over $16 million in federal funding is modernizing electricity grids across the Maritimes
- In New Brunswick, smart upgrades are providing reliable, affordable power to 36,000 customers
- Helping keep the lights on and costs down

Clean power and Indigenous leadership
We are supporting Indigenous-led clean energy projects across Canada. These projects are creating jobs, supporting local economies and bringing more affordable clean power to communities.
- In Saskatchewan, the Indigenous-owned Wicehtowak Solar Project is:
- creating jobs
- supporting economic growth in the George Gordon First Nation
- delivering clean power to thousands of homes
- In Nunavut, a new hydro project led by the Inuit-owned Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation could soon replace costly and polluting diesel
- Providing Iqaluit with clean, reliable energy

Methane reduction
New agreements and regulations are cutting methane emissions from oil and gas operations across Canada, protecting our air and supporting clean growth.
- Canada and Alberta have agreed to advance work that will cut the province’s methane emissions in oil and gas by 75% below 2014 levels by 2035
- Focus on practical regulations and investments
- Enhanced regulations are projected to cut 304 million tonnes of emissions by 2040
- By 2023, methane emissions fell 40% since 2014, while protecting jobs and the economy

Investing in Canadian innovation
We are investing in Canadian innovation and scaling homegrown solutions so Canadian companies can take a leading role in the shift to a low‑carbon global economy. This includes transforming Canada’s auto industry. We are making it easier and more affordable for Canadians to drive electric vehicles and charge them across the country. This will help lower fuel costs, reduce pollution and support cleaner transportation.
- The new Electric Vehicle Affordability Program offers rebates on eligible new vehicles of up to $5,000 off the price of battery electric vehicles, and up to $2,500 off plug-in hybrids.
- Enhance our national EV charging network through investments of $1.5 billion, making it easier and more convenient for drivers to charge across the country.
Your questions, answered
How does this help my family?
Canada’s climate strategy invests in affordable clean energy, better jobs, and support for workers. For example, families can access support to upgrade their homes—things like better insulation and heat pumps—which leads to lower energy bills and cleaner air at home. In Newfoundland and Ontario, families have already upgraded their homes, cutting energy use in half and reducing emissions by more than 80%.
Will there be new job opportunities for Canadians because of this strategy?
Yes! Over 350,000 Canadians already work in clean tech, and by 2050, clean economy jobs could grow to 1.5 million. Big investments from companies like LG Energy Solutions and Volkswagen are bringing new electric vehicle battery plants and supply chains to Canada, creating thousands of well-paying jobs.
What does grid modernization mean for me?
Grid modernization is about making sure electricity is more reliable and affordable. In the Maritimes, more than $16 million of federal funding is modernizing grids, providing better service for 36,000 homes in New Brunswick and lowering bills in Prince Edward Island with new smart technologies.
How is Canada supporting Indigenous leadership in clean energy?
Major projects, like the Wicehtowak Solar Project in Saskatchewan and a new hydro project in Nunavut, are being led by Indigenous communities. These projects create local jobs, supply affordable clean power to thousands of homes, and support long-term economic growth in Indigenous communities.
How does this strategy keep Canada competitive globally?
Canada’s economy is changing fast. By investing in clean technology, critical minerals, and renewable energy, Canada remains an attractive place for businesses to invest and create jobs. New support for research, innovation, and sector growth—like the Productivity Super-Deduction for businesses and big tax credits for clean energy—help Canadian companies compete on the world stage.
Is this good for the environment?
Absolutely. The action we are taking is a foundational action in Canada’s transition to a net-zero future. Without action, climate change could severely damage the wealth and well-being of Canadians for generations to come, and cut the average Canadian household income by nearly 20% by the end of the century. Canada’s investments in clean power, grid modernization and clean power will mean lower emissions, cleaner air, and a more resilient environment that ensures we meet climate targets while growing the economy.
How can I get involved or benefit from these initiatives?
Every Canadian can take part. You can look for energy retrofit programs, EV rebates, or training opportunities in your area.

How will methane regulations help Canadians?
The new rules will mean cleaner air, healthier communities and reducing emissions that contribute to climate change. They support workers in updated, cleaner industries and help keep Canada’s economy strong for the future.
