Privacy and Privacy Impact Assessments – Environment and Climate Change Canada

Privacy impacts all of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s programs and operations. The Department's privacy responsibilities are governed by the Privacy Act and the Treasury Board Secretariat Policy on Privacy Protection, and other applicable policies. They govern the way the Department creates, collects, uses, disposes, discloses and retains personal information.

As directed by the Treasury Board Secretariat, Environment and Climate Change Canada strengthens privacy protection through the development of Privacy Impact Assessments.

Privacy Impact Assessments

Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) provide a framework to ensure that privacy is considered throughout the design or re-design of programs or services. The assessment will identify the extent to which proposals comply with the provisions of the Privacy Act, regulations and Treasury Board Secretariat Directive on Privacy Impact Assessment. Assessments assist managers and decision-makers to avoid or mitigate privacy risks and promote fully informed policy, program and system design choices.

Privacy Protocol Assessment for Non-Administrative Purposes

A privacy protocol assessment (Privacy Protocol) is designed to assess initiatives that collect, use, retain or disclose personal information for non-administrative purposes, including research, statistical, audit and evaluation purposes.
