Message from the new Deputy Minister

Dear Environment and Climate Change Canada Colleagues,

I am honoured to join you today as your new Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

Let me begin by saying how pleased I am to be returning to the department where I began my public service career more than thirty years ago. It’s an exciting time for me and I look forward to renewing connections and building new ones.

As your Deputy Minister, I know I carry a duty and a responsibility to support the important work you do. Every day whether it is protecting and conserving our environment and biodiversity, fighting climate change, advancing our science agenda, reducing pollution, providing accurate and timely weather information to Canadians, and providing support through corporate and enabling functions, your efforts shape the lives of Canada’s diverse communities and the future of our country.

As I have witnessed from a distance in recent years, your dedication and hard work have resulted in great achievements. In the weeks leading up to taking on this new role, so many people have reached out to tell me about the talent, commitment and professionalism of the people at ECCC. I am keen to get to know our teams, and I plan to reach out to as many of you as possible over the coming months, both in the National Capital Region and across Canada.

Among my priorities will be to advance Public Service-wide efforts including on mental health, diversity and inclusion, as well as innovation. As the Clerk has said, our Public Service is the world’s finest and with your engagement and collaboration we will continue to build on that strength.

As I begin the process of learning more about the Department and our work, let me express my appreciation to everyone who has supported me in the lead-up to my arrival and for the warm welcome I have received. I would also like to thank Stephen for his significant contributions as Deputy Minister. It is our shared task to maintain this momentum.

I look forward to working closely with Martine and with all of you as we continue to advance the important work of ECCC.

T. Christine Hogan
Deputy Minister
