Share your ideas: Amendments to the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations for the Meliadine Mine
Current status: Closed
This consultation is open from October 27, 2023, to December 22, 2023.
Background
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is seeking comments from the public and Indigenous Nations on a proposed authorization under the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations (MDMER). The authorization would allow for the disposal of mine waste in fish-frequented water bodies at the Meliadine Mine site. This requires an amendment to Schedule 2 of the MDMER to list these water bodies as “tailings impoundment areas”.
- Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (the Proponent) is proposing to expand the Meliadine Mine to increase the tailings capacity of its existing tailings management facility. The expansion would expand the mine’s operational life. The gold mine is located approximately 25 km north of Rankin Inlet, near the western shore of Hudson Bay in the Kivalliq District of Nunavut.
- The regulatory amendments, if approved, would list fish-frequented water bodies as “Tailings Impoundment Areas” for the Meliadine Mine.
Focus of this consultation
ECCC is consulting on the Alternatives Assessment report and the Fish Habitat Compensation Plan.
