Methyl Bromide
Methyl bromide is a broad-spectrum chemical fumigant that has been used since the 1930s to control insects, pathogens, and weeds in agricultural applications, as well as to control insects in buildings and in commodities (i.e. shipping).
As methyl bromide was identified as an ozone-depleting substance, it became subject to a global phase-out under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
In Canada, methyl bromide is subject to the Ozone Depleting Substances and Halocarbon Alternatives Regulations, which prohibit the manufacture, import and export of methyl bromide, except for critical uses approved by Parties to the Montreal Protocol, use in quarantine and pre-shipment applications, as a feedstock, or as an analytical standard.
In addition to controls put in place by Environment and Climate Change Canada, all pest control products containing methyl bromide must be registered under the Pest Control Products Act, administered by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Health Canada.
