Table 5. First Aid Measures for Exposure to Ethanolamine and ACQ Solutions

Exposure First action Second action
Eye contact
  • Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove contact lenses, if present, after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing eye.
    Workers should not wear contact lenses
  • Call a poison control centre or doctor immediately for treatment advice (have product label at hand).
Skin contact
  • Take off contaminated clothing.
  • Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes.
  • Call a poison control centre or doctor immediately for treatment advice (have product label at hand).
  • Get prompt medical attention if the skin becomes inflamed (redness, itchiness or pain).
Inhalation
  • Immediately remove the exposed person to fresh air.
  • If breathing has stopped:
  • Call emergency services (ex. 911)
  • Apply artificial respiration with barrier device
    Coughing and sneezing occur almost immediately after excessive inhalation of ammonia fumes.
  • Call a poison control centre or doctor immediately for treatment advice.
  • Keep the affected person warm and quiet.
  • Get immediate medical attention.
Ingestion
  • Call a poison control centre or doctor immediately for treatment advice (have product label at hand).
  • Have person sip a glass of water if able to swallow.
  • Do not induce vomiting unless told to do so by a poison control centre or doctor.
    Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

 

Personnel should follow the recommendations from Table 6 of Chapter A outlining general precautions and personal hygiene measures.
