Environment and Climate Change Canada is responsible for the pollution prevention provisions of the Fisheries Act and its associated regulations, such as the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations. Owners and operators of metal and diamond mines in Canada may be subject to the Regulations.

Environmental effects monitoring

Tailings impoundment areas

Authorization to deposit mine waste into a tailings impoundment area may require a regulatory amendment to list the water frequented by fish on Schedule 2 of the Regulations.
