Background and focus

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is seeking comments on proposed amendments to the Migratory Birds Regulations, 2022 to modify certain hunting season dates, daily bag limits and possession limits for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 hunting seasons.

Hunting provisions of the Migratory Birds Regulations, 2022 are reviewed every second year with input from the provinces and territories and a range of other stakeholders. The consultation process for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 hunting seasons began in fall 2023 when biological information on the status of migratory game bird populations became available. This information is presented in a report titled Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada. A second report, titled Proposals to Amend the Canadian Migratory Birds Regulations, outlines the proposed changes to the hunting provisions of the Migratory Birds Regulations, 2022, as well as other proposed amendments to the regulations. Electronic copies of the above-mentioned documents may be viewed on the web page Consultation process on Migratory Game Bird Hunting Regulations.

Consultation

Your ideas and input are sought on the proposed regulatory amendments outlined in the report “Proposals to Amend the Canadian Migratory Birds Regulations”.

The input gathered through this process will be carefully considered. The final regulatory amendments are anticipated to be published in the Canada Gazette, Part II in spring 2024.
