Halons in fire protection: code of practice overview
The code of practice on halons has been in effect since September 1997.
Objective
This code of practice recommends best practices to control and minimize the release of halons to the environment from facilities that use halons as fire extinguishing agents.
Target audience
The code of practice applies to owners and operators that use halons for fire protection.
Adopting the code of practice
If the code of practice applies to your facility or operations, you are encouraged to:
- implement best practices to reduce or limit the release of halons to the environment
- monitor and conduct tests for halon releases to the environment
- develop and implement a decommissioning plan to remove halons from decommissioned fire extinguishing systems
