Acrylonitrile: pollution prevention planning notice
Note: this notice is no longer in force.
This notice (PDF) applied to any person or class of persons who, on the date of publication of this notice, owned or operated a facility involving the manufacture of synthetic rubber, where such manufacture used acrylonitrile and resulted in releases of acrylonitrile to the environment.
Performance results
The objective of the P2 notice was to reduce the releases of acrylonitrile to the lowest possible levels. The single facility that was subject to the notice accounted for 82% of releases of acrylonitrile to the environment from the chemical manufacturing sector.
At the beginning of the P2 planning process, the facility indicated that they had already taken significant actions to reduce release levels of acrylonitrile and thought no further reductions were possible. However, through P2 planning they managed to increase their reductions beyond expectations.
The following is a breakdown of the results:
- off-site disposal reduced by 100% (12 600 kg)
- fugitive releases reduced 89% (4150 kg)
- storage and handling releases reduced 82% (400 kg)
- stack or point releases increased 14% (300 kg)
The facility reduced their total releases of acrylonitrile by 85%.
