Background
The screening assessment focuses on 16 substances referred to as the Monocyclic and Bicyclic Sesquiterpenes Group. It consists of 14 substances that have been divided into 3 subgroups based on chemical structure, properties, and/or toxicity, as well as 2 individual substances namely sandalwood oil and guaiazulene. These 16 substances are a part of a larger group of 76 substances referred to collectively under the CMP as the Terpenes and Terpenoids Group.
Three of these 76 substances were subsequently determined to be of low concern to both human health and the environment through other approaches. The conclusions for CAS RN 25428-43-7 is provided in the Final Screening Assessment for the Rapid Screening of Substances with Limited General Population Exposure. Conclusions for CAS RNs 29350-73-0 and 68916-97-2 are provided in the Final Screening Assessment of Substances Identified as Being of Low Concern using the Ecological Risk Classification of Organic Substances and the Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC)-based Approach for Certain Substances.
Fifteen of these 76 substances (CAS RNs 80-56-8, 1113-21-9, 8000-46-2, 8002-09-3, 8006-64-2, 8007-01-0, 8007-02-1, 8008-31-9, 8008-52-4, 8008-57-9, 8014-19-5, 8015-77-8, 8016-85-1, 8021-28-1 and 9005-90-7) were assessed as a part of the Acyclic, Monocyclic, and Bicyclic Monoterpenes Group.
Twelve of these 76 substances (CAS RNs 8006-78-8, 8016-88-4, 8022-96-6, 8024-43-9, 8024-08-6, 80-54-6, 91-51-0, 37677-14-8, 52474-60-9, 52475-86-2, 65405-84-7 and 66327-54-6) were assessed as a part of the Phenylpropanoids and Aldehydes Group.
Fourteen of these 76 substances (CAS RNs 8013-10-3, 8023-75-4, 70788-30-6, 84961-67-1, 90045-36-6, 3738-00-9, 8016-37-9, 164288-52-2, 8022-56-8, 8008-93-3, 3407-42-9, 66068-84-6, 68877-29-2 and 70955-71-4) were assessed as a part of the Fourteen Terpene and Terpenoid Substances Group.
Fourteen of these 76 substances (CAS RNs 469-61-4, 470-40-6, 489-40-7, 514-51-2, 546-28-1, 8000-27-9, 68608-32-2, 68990-83-0, 59056-62-1, 471-3-4, 4572-09-2, 8031-03-6, 84082-54-2 and 90045-38-8) were assessed as a part of the Tricyclic Sesquiterpenes and Triterpenoids Group.
Two of these 76 substances (CAS RNs 117-98-6 and 68917-65-7) were originally included in the Tricyclic Sesquiterpenes and Triterpenoids Group but have been removed to be assessed in a separate assessment.
