The Consumer Product Safety Directorate regularly receives reports on human health or safety concerns related to consumer products and cosmetics.  Consumer products are covered under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, while cosmetics are covered under the Food and Drugs Act.

Industry is required to submit reports to the Consumer Product Safety Directorate when they become aware of an incident related to their consumer product.  Consumers report concerns about consumer products and cosmetics on a voluntary basis.

Appliances: 24%; Housewares: 22%; Children’s Products: 14%; Electronics: 11%; Home and Automobile Maintenance: 8%; Grooming Products and Accessories: 7%; Outdoor Living: 5%; Clothing, Textiles, and Accessories: 4%; Sports, Recreation, and Hobby: 4%.

Not every report the Consumer Product Safety Directorate receives involves an injury.  Over the time period, injuries, including deaths, were reported in 42% of reports received.
