Summary
The Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) administers and enforces the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and regulations made under it.
The purpose of this Cyclical Enforcement (CE) project was to verify compliance of charcoal products which are subject to the Hazardous Products (Charcoal) Regulations.
For this project, compliance of charcoal products with the Hazardous Products (Charcoal) Regulations was determined by Health Canada inspectors reviewing relevant product labels at select establishments.
Prior to initiating this CE project, the CPSP carried out a market survey to quantify the presence of charcoal product industry members in Canada. Targets were then selected from that list of companies.
Over the course of the 2015/16 fiscal year, labels of twenty-four different brands of products were evaluated for compliance. This resulted in five voluntary recalls, eleven commitments for future label corrections, and eight instances where no corrective action was required.
