Compliance Verification Project 2019-2020: Toys Regulations (Magnets)

Summary

The Consumer Product Safety Program (CPSP) administers and enforces the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA) and its regulations.

The purpose of this Compliance Verification (CV) project was to verify compliance of toys with specific requirements of the Toys Regulations.

For this project, compliance of select toys with the Toys Regulation was determined through a sampling and testing process by which Health Canada inspectors visited retail and online establishments and sampled relevant products. Compliance with the requirements listed under the Regulations was verified through testing at the Product Safety Laboratory.

Prior to initiating this CV project, the CPSP carried out a market survey to determine the presence of toy companies in Canada. Targets were then selected from that list of companies.

Over the course of the 2019-2020 fiscal years, mechanical testing of 20 different products were carried out. The testing resulted in 4 recalls and 1 Public Advisory. There were 15 instances where no corrective action was required.
