Registration decision statement Footnote 1 for pyridate

Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act, is granting registration for the sale and use of Pyridate Technical and Tough 600 EC Herbicide containing the technical grade active ingredient pyridate, for selective suppression or control of certain emerged broadleaf weeds. Tough 600 EC Herbicide may be applied pre-plant and/or pre-emergence in corn (field and sweet), mint, chickpeas, lentils, field peas and canola, and post-emergence in corn (field and sweet), chickpeas and mint.

This decision is consistent with the Proposed Registration Decision PRD2021-04, Pyridate and Tough 600 EC Herbicide, which contains a detailed evaluation of the information submitted in support of this registration. The evaluation found that, under the approved conditions of use, the health and environmental risks and the value of the pest control product(s) are acceptable. See Appendix I for a summary of comments received during the consultation process as well as Health Canada's response to these comments.

Other information

The relevant test data on which the decision is based (as referenced in PRD2021-04) are available for public inspection, upon application, in the PMRA's Reading Room . For more information, please contact the PMRA's Pest Management Information Service by phone (1-800-267-6315) or by e-mail (pmra.info-arla@hc-sc.gc.ca).

Appendix I Comments and responses

Comments

  1. A comment was received from a pediatrician, expressing concern at the presence of pyridate in food.
  2. Three comments were received from members of the public arguing that pesticides are harmful to human health, animals and plants and that allowing the registrations would result in an increase in use and concentration of pesticides.

Response

Before registering a pest control product, Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency thoroughly assesses the value of the product as well as the risks to human health and the environment. Only products with demonstrated value as well as acceptable health and environmental risks are registered. The risk assessment (as summarized in PRD2021-04) concludes that the use of Pyridate Technical and Tough 600 EC Herbicide, for selective suppression or control of certain emerged broadleaf weeds, is acceptable when the product is used according to the label directives.
