As part of its Regulatory Review of Drugs and Devices initiative, Health Canada is establishing a new division within the Therapeutic Products Directorate’s Medical Devices Bureau to allow for a more targeted pre-market review of digital health technologies, to adapt to rapidly changing technologies in digital health, and to respond to fast innovation cycles.

As the federal regulator of medical devices, Health Canada is supporting the market emergence of current and future medical devices using a digital health technology in order to meet the growing demand from patients, health care systems and industry, while ensuring that they remain safe and effective for the people of Canada.

Health Canada is seeking nominations for members for the Scientific Advisory Committee on Digital Health Technologies (SAC-DHT).  The Committee will provide scientific, technical and clinical advice to the Therapeutic Products Directorate (TPD) on digital health technologies. The Committee's Terms of Reference is attached. Tentatively, the first meeting of the Committee is expected to be held in the fall of 2018.

Health Canada is looking for expertise in the areas of:

  • Cybersecurity
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Software as a Medical Device
  • Telemedicine
  • Wireless medical devices
  • Mobile medical apps
  • Medical device data systems
  • Medical device interoperability

Members will be selected based on the required expertise, the individual's breadth of experience and his or her familiarity with committee work. Consideration will also be given to the candidate's ability to balance scientific rigour with practical considerations, regulatory requirements and international perspectives. Health Canada strives to maintain a balance of gender, regional and linguistic representation in its selection of members.

Committee members will be appointed by the Director General of the TPD following a review of all nominations by a Health Canada selection committee. The appointed members will have to undergo government security clearance and provide a declaration of their Affiliations and Interests. As a condition of membership, a summary of this information will be prepared, and once approved by the member, it will be posted to Health Canada's website. All travel and accommodation expenses will be compensated according to the Treasury Board policies.  Members must participate as volunteers in order to be eligible for indemnification.
