Supporting the community’s French-speaking population
Francophone immigration outside Quebec plays an important role in enhancing the vitality and economic development of Francophone minority communities across the country.
In Gloucester County, the communities of Chaleur (Belle-Baie, Bathurst and the Pabineau Mi'kmaq First Nation) and northeastern Acadia (Caraquet, Rivière du Nord and Hautes-Terres) are part of the Welcoming Francophone Communities initiative launched by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. This initiative supports the economic and socio-cultural integration of French-speaking newcomers. New Brunswick’s Acadian Peninsula, which includes Caraquet, Lamèque Island, Shippagan, Hautes-Terres, Tracadie and Neguac, is also one of six communities in Canada participating in the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot, a community-driven pilot designed to spread the benefits of economic immigration to smaller communities and increase the number of French-speaking newcomers in Francophone minority communities outside of Quebec.
In total, 89% of Gloucester County’s population speaks French, with 81% speaking French as a first language and 7.9% as a second language.
