Canada extends access to temporary residence for those who have applied for the Ukrainian family reunification pathway
January 16, 2026—Ottawa—As we continue to witness the devastating impact of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, Canada remains committed to providing support for those with family in Canada. In October 2023, we launched a family reunification pathway to permanent residence for Ukrainian nationals with family members in Canada to help them stay together as their rebuild their lives.
Today, new measures were announced to make it easier for Ukrainians who applied under the family reunification pathway and their family members to apply to extend their stay in Canada while waiting for a decision on their permanent residence application.
Eligible Ukrainians will have until March 31, 2027, to apply from within Canada for
- a new open work permit
- an extension of an existing work permit
- a new study permit
- an extension or restoration of their temporary resident status
This can be done even if they have not yet received an acknowledgement of receipt on their permanent residence application. Standard fees will apply.
