How to Get a Police Certificate – Eritrea

If you need to give your fingerprints for a police certificate, this isn’t the same as giving your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) for an application.

Names of the documents you need

Clearance Certificate

Police certificate and IRCC requirements

You don’t need to provide a Police Certificate with your application.

We will send you a file number and a letter requesting a clearance certificate after you send your application for permanent residence, citizenship, or for some temporary resident programs.

You must bring your file number and that letter when you apply for a clearance certificate.

How to apply

If you live in Eritrea

You should apply in person to the Eritrea Police Headquarters (view Contact information for the complete address).

You must:

  • bring your Identity card or passport
  • allow fingerprints to be taken
  • bring 2 passport size photographs
  • bring the letter and file number from IRCC or the Canadian High Commission requesting the certificate
  • pay the applicable fees

If you’re a foreign resident of Eritrea, you must also provide a copy of your passport and copies of visas or permits showing your period of legal residence in Eritrea

  • Police certificates are only available to foreign residents with a proper residence permit.

If you live outside of Eritrea

You should designate a representative with power of attorney to make the application in Eritrea to the Eritrea Police Headquarters (view Contact information for the complete address) or you can apply through the nearest Eritrean Embassy.

You (or your designate) must:

  • bring a copy of your Identity card
  • bring a copy of your passport
  • bring a full set of your fingerprints
  • bring the letter and file number from IRCC or the Canadian High Commission requesting the certificate
  • pay the applicable fees

Special considerations

  • Police certificates are only available to Eritrean citizens who have done national service
  • Police certificates will not be issued to Eritrean citizens who cannot provide evidence that they have paid a state imposed tax which is placed on all Eritrean citizens, regardless of country of residence
