Transit visa: How to apply
How to apply
COVID-19: Changes to biometrics requirement
Normally, you need to give biometrics if you haven’t given biometrics in the last 10 years. If your local visa application centre is not open due to COVID-19, there are temporary measures in place for biometrics.
Apply online with the IRCC Portal
Follow these steps to apply online.
1. Create an account and sign in
If it’s your first time using the IRCC Portal, we’ll ask for your email and give you a code to sign up for an account.
2. Complete the online form and upload your documents
After you answer all the questions, you’ll get a list of documents you need to upload.
This includes the documents that show you’re eligible to travel to Canada right now and support your visa application.
Check the list of documents based on your situation.
Upload proof of vaccination to ArriveCAN only, if applicable (you don’t need to upload it with your application).

If you can’t apply online because of a disability, or if you’re travelling with an identity or travel document that was issued to a refugee, a stateless person or a non-citizen, you can apply on paper.
Apply on paper
Only online applications will be accepted and processed
However, you can apply on paper if:
- you can’t apply online because of a disability, or
- you’re travelling with an identity or travel document that was issued to a refugee, a stateless person or a non-citizen.
Get the application package
The application package includes an instruction guide and all the forms you need to fill out.
Read the guide carefully before you complete the application.
Each individual applicant must submit a completed application form. Applicants under the age of 18 must have this form signed by a parent or a guardian.
There is no fee for a transit visa or to give biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) for a transit visa.
If you apply on paper at a VAC, you’ll have to pay the VAC service fees.
Submit your application
Families should send their individual applications in one package. The principal applicant must send this combined package to the location where their application will be processed.
