You need a work permit
If you’re a freelance horse jockey coming to work in Ontario, you need a work permit.
Eligibility requirements
These instructions apply to you if you can provide the following documents with your work permit application:
- a jockey licence or a letter confirming your eligibility for licensing from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario
- an offer of employment from the employer or horse owner making the initial offer
- They must be located in Ontario.
- proof that the first race you’ll enter is a stakes race
- You can enter before the race to train with the horses.
You must also meet the general eligibility requirements for a work permit.
Type of work permit
You can apply for an employer-specific work permit.
When you fill out your work permit application form, select “Exemption from labour market impact assessment” as the type of work permit in the “Details of intended work in Canada” section.
Before you apply
Before you submit your work permit application, your employer must
- submit an offer of employment
- pay a $230 employer compliance fee
- give you an offer of employment number
