LCC Welcomes Professor Jacques Commaille
April 2024
On 4 April 2024, the LCC welcomed French sociologist and professor emeritus Jacques Commaille to its Ottawa office. This was a stop on Dr. Commaille’s Canadian tour for his latest book, “L’esprit politique des savoirs: le droit, la société, la nature”. Dr. Commaille is professor emeritus at École normale supérieure Paris-Saclay, a member of the Institut des sciences sociales, and was named Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in 2013.
The rich discussion with Dr. Commaille centered around questions of law’s place in society and the ways in which society engages law. Dr. Commaille noted that citizens are becoming increasingly involved with questions that were traditionally the province of experts, such as science and law, in the context of a broader social embrace of democratized processes of engagement, such as through various forms of citizen committees.
“It was an honour to speak with an esteemed international scholar,” said LCC President Shauna Van Praagh. “There are clear intersections between Dr. Commaille’s work and the role of the LCC, in particular with respect to the importance of facilitating the broad and inclusive participation of people in democratic processes, including law reform.”
