Fleet Maintenance Facility

FMF Cape Breton | FMF Cape Scott

Fleet Maintenance Facility (FMF) provides a full range of naval engineering maintenance and repair capabilities to the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). Our team of civilian and military personnel maintains our warships, submarines, auxiliary vessels and other units.

There are two Fleet Maintenance Facilities – FMF Cape Breton, located on the stunning West Coast of Canada in Victoria, B.C., and FMF Cape Scott, located along the beautiful Atlantic shoreline in Halifax, N.S.

Mission, Vision, and History of FMF

MISSION

The FMFs’ strategic capabilities provide agile and flexible quality engineering and maintenance services to the RCN & Fleets, and also provide unique support to other Defence stakeholders.

VISION

The FMFs will strengthen their future planning agility while modernizing internal processes, supported by stronger communications to enable continued success of employees and the FMF reputation of excellence.

HISTORY

The facilities began as two Cape-class maintenance ships—HMCS Cape Breton and HMCS Cape Scott—RCN’s first mobile repair units with workshops for engine, welding, electronics, and more. After decommissioning in the 1970s, they were based on opposite coasts of their namesakes—Cape Scott in Halifax, Cape Breton in Victoria—yet kept their original names. Known as Fleet Maintenance Group, the ships operated until maintenance moved ashore in the mid-1970s. In 1996, they merged with Naval Engineering and Ship Repair Units to become today’s Fleet Maintenance Facilities Cape Breton and Cape Scott.

Capabilities

Some of what our team maintains and repairs includes:

  • Command and control systems
  • Communications systems
  • Guns, missiles, torpedoes and other weapons
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Various engines, turbines and propulsion systems
  • Electrical generators and distribution systems
  • Ships’ hulls
  • Submarine periscopes and weapons

We can also fabricate some of what we need in-house to keep our vessels in top shape. A problem at sea is no problem at all! We can send mobile repair parties to ships at sea around the world.
