Effective immediately, Canada is imposing sanctions against 3 Lebanese individuals under the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act (Sergei Magnitsky Law) in coordination with the United States and the United Kingdom. These sanctions list 3 Lebanese nationals involved in acts of significant corruption, including the misappropriation of public assets for personal gain and the transfer of the proceeds of corruption to foreign states.

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that Canada is imposing sanctions against 9 individuals and 7 entities under the Special Economic Measures Act. These sanctions are part of the Special Economic Measures (Belarus) Regulations and are being imposed in response to the ongoing gross and systematic violations of human rights occurring in Belarus. They also target persons who are complicit in Russia’s ongoing violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in part through Belarus and with Belarusian support.

Jessica Blitt (BA Hons [Peace and Conflict Studies and Philosophy], University of Toronto, 1996; MA [International Affairs], Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University, 1999) joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in 2002. At Headquarters, she has worked in the Peacebuilding and Human Security Division and the Emergency Management Bureau. She has also been seconded to the Foreign and Defence Policy Secretariat of the Privy Council Office, as well as to National Defence, where she was the deputy director and then director of NATO policy. Overseas, she has served at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, the Embassy to Italy and the Mission to the European Union. Most recently, she was director and senior departmental adviser to the minister of foreign affairs.
