Canada and the Kingdom of the Netherlands welcome the Gambia’s application before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Myanmar on the alleged violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Genocide Convention). In order to uphold international accountability and prevent impunity, Canada and the Netherlands hereby express their intention to jointly explore all options to support and assist the Gambia in these efforts.

Canada currently supports mine action as part of development assistance, security and stabilization programming. Canada’s funding helps universalize the Ottawa Convention and activities in Afghanistan, Colombia, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Ukraine.
Unexploded landmines prevent local populations from living and working on their lands in more than 60 countries. Every year, 7,000 people lose their lives and thousands more are injured in areas contaminated by these weapons around the world.
Canada strongly condemns the escalating violence in Iraq, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of protestors and injured thousands more. We urge all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from violence.
