Canada remains deeply concerned by the plight of the Rohingya and other ethnic minorities in Myanmar. The extrajudicial killings and other gross violations of human rights, including sexual violence, are part of a widespread attack against the Rohingya. These are crimes against humanity.
The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced, on behalf of the Government of Canada, targeted sanctions against Major-General Maung Maung Soe, under the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act. These sanctions are a result of the significant role played by this key military official in human rights violations against the Rohingya in Myanmar and in the violence and persecution that has forced more than 688,000 Rohingya to flee their country.
I have recently returned from visiting once again the large Rohingya camp in Bangladesh, and have spoken with senior officials in that country and in Myanmar. I also visited the town of Sittwe in central Rakhine State, and joined a number of diplomats and UN officials on a daylong helicopter tour of the north of Rakhine.
