The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.
Today, the Government of Canada marked the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy with signature ceremonies in Normandy, France, and in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Canadian, French and British representatives, alongside Veterans, Canadian youth and their guests will participate in a ceremony at the National War Memorial to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, and to remember those who served and sacrificed for our freedom.
D-Day, and the ensuing Battle of Normandy, was one of Canada’s most significant military engagements of the 20th century. Through the commemorative journey this spring, Canadians have joined Veterans to pay tribute to the more than 90,000 Canadian soldiers who volunteered to serve our country and saw action in the Normandy Campaign.
From May 31 to June 2, 2019, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, attended ceremonies and events to commemorate the contributions of Canadian soldiers during the Second World War’s Italian Campaign.
