Five years after setting up the AlterInvest Fund, the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) announced today that their partnership is demonstrating positive results. Created in 2003 to support the growth of small and medium-sized businesses (SME), the AlterInvest fund has invested $453 million in 371 SMEs in different industries.

The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment and Regional Minister for southern Alberta, on behalf of Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced today federal funding of $4 million towards a new state-art applied research centre at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT Polytechnic). The funding will help businesses in Alberta's energy, manufacturing and construction industries test and develop innovative technologies and products.

Today, Dick Harris, Member of Parliament for Cariboo - Prince George, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced funding of $136,000 towards the Upper Nechako Wilderness Council to explore wilderness tourism industry opportunities, for the Mountain Pine Beetle affected community of Vanderhoof. Funding is provided under the Community Economic Diversification Initiative (CEDI), a component of the federal Mountain Pine Beetle Program, through Western Economic Diversification Canada.
