It is a pleasure to be back in the City. Twenty years ago, I started my first proper job here, as a credit analyst - remember that quaint role? at an investment bank - remember those archaic institutions? I came to London then because it appeared poised to realize the promise of market-based finance and to reassume its role at the centre of global finance. Today, I come to London, when so many are burying markets, to praise them and set out some thoughts on how to make them more robust.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) today released its 2007-08 Annual Report. According to the Report, website visits are continually increasing from year-year, and have reached an all-time high of approximately 1.7 million. More and more consumers are turning to FCAC as a source of information for their financial needs, with twice as many Canadians ordering or downloading publications from FCAC's website.

The 2008 Deborah Fletcher Award of Excellence in Filmmaking on International Development will be awarded to a documentary film on the life and work of Canadian physician, writer and humanitarian Dr. James Orbinski. The award ceremony and screening, to be held this evening at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, are part of International Cooperation Days, a biennial conference organized by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). CIDA President Margaret Biggs will present the award on behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation.
