Government of Canada and British Columbia confirm additional case of H7N9 avian influenza in Canada

Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Gregory Taylor and Dr. Bonnie Henry, British Columbia's Deputy Provincial Health Officer today confirmed that the second individual in B.C. has now tested positive for the H7N9 avian influenza strain. As noted by health officials on January 26th, the husband and wife recently returned to Canada from China.


Six individuals and two companies accused of smuggling tobacco

Five individuals appeared today at the Montréal courthouse to face charges of conspiracy and smuggling tobacco, while another accused person, Carlos Almeida de Oliveira, is the subject of an arrest warrant. According to the Canada Border Services Agency's (CBSA) investigation, the accused developed and carried out a plan to illegally bring tobacco products into Canada without paying duties and taxes owing under the Customs Act and the Excise Act, 2001.


Charlottetown man fined for border infraction

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that on January 28, 2015, in Woodstock Provincial Court, James W. MacMillan, 59, of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island pleaded guilty to one count of making false or deceptive statements under the Customs Act. MacMillan was fined $2,000 as well as a victim surcharge of $600.
