Today, the Governments of Canada and Manitoba announced that three northern Manitoba communities will benefit from the New Building Canada Plan's Small Communities Fund, making it the seventh funding announcement under the Small Communities Fund in the Province of Manitoba.
The Small Communities Fund is part of the $10-billion Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component of the New Building Canada Fund. It will provide $1 billion to municipalities with fewer than 100,000 residents for priority public infrastructure projects that deliver on local needs.
With the funding announced today, Ralls Island, in the Rural Municipality of Kelsey, will add approximately 250 connections to the existing water distribution system; the Community of Sherridon will more than triple its water treatment plant capacity by adding two parallel filtration systems; and Wabowden will add a third cell to its existing wastewater lagoon system to address a shortage of hydraulic capacity.
These projects will help these small northern Manitoba communities improve their water and wastewater infrastructure. When completed, the systems will better meet the needs of their residents today and into the future.
The three projects announced today are the last in a series of 26 projects recently announced across the province that will benefit from funding from the Governments of Canada and Manitoba under the Small Communities Fund. Including the previously announced projects in the Interlake region, the southwest region, the southeast region, the south central and north central regions, the Parkland region, as well as the Rural Municipality of East St. Paul, the Government of Canada is contributing close to $16 million in funding while the Province of Manitoba is contributing close to $17 million.
