1. What is sustainable development?

Sustainable development is about working to achieve and maintain healthy natural and built environments, a vibrant and just society, and a well-functioning economy for present and future generations.

Sustainable development can be achieved through effective, responsible and equitable use of human, natural and economic capital over the long-term.

2. What is the relationship between sustainable development and public health?

Sustainable development and public health are inseparable. Healthy communities are a direct result of sustainable development, which encompasses the environmental, social, and economic factors that influence the health outcomes of Canadians.

The core of the Public Health Agency of Canada's mission; to promote and protect the health of Canadians, is tied to the three pillars of sustainable development.

3. What does the Public Health Agency of Canada do in relation to sustainable development?

The Public Health Agency of Canada strives towards integrating sustainable development within its policies, programs and plans. Its commitment and actions to sustainable development are described in its Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy.

4. Who is responsible for implementing sustainable development at the Public Health Agency of Canada?

Sustainable development is a shared responsibility among all employees, however, the Office of Sustainable Development is responsible for promoting sustainable development initiatives across the Agency. Programs are responsible for ensuring that policies, plans, and programs are developed in alignment with the principles and practices of sustainable development and the PHAC Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy.

PHAC has a Sustainable Development Advocate who oversees and promotes the work undertaken by the Office of the Sustainable Development.

The Public Health Agency of Canada reports on its Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy commitments in the annual Departmental Performance Report.
