World Alzheimer's Day 2016 September 21, 2016

Statement

September 21 marks World Alzheimer’s Day - a day to focus on raising awareness, inspiring action, and helping people affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia around the world.

Alzheimer's disease is close to the hearts of many Canadians. This illness leads to the loss of precious memories and abilities that affect the independence and quality of life that we all hold so dear. Those living with Alzheimer's disease as well as those we have lost to this insidious illness, along with families, friends and caregivers inspire us to work together to advance research, provide care and support, and help all Canadians better understand this illness.

Canada is a partner in global efforts to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Our discoveries contribute new knowledge and our research collaborations accelerate progress. For example, the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging connects 360 Canadian researchers working across the full range of dementia research including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care and support. Federal support for innovations is turning research into new products and services designed to meet the needs of patients and families.

Addressing the significant public health challenge posed by dementia requires cooperation between all levels of government, and with other sectors. We are pleased to support Bill C-233, An Act respecting a national strategy for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, which is currently before Parliament. Our collaboration with the Alzheimer Society of Canada on Dementia Friends Canada is also building a community of dementia friends across our country. These are people committed to helping promote understanding of dementia and providing information on ways we can all do more to help those with dementia stay connected to their communities.

As Minister of Health, I encourage all Canadians to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and turn your knowledge into action to help improve the lives of those affected in our communities.

Join me as a Dementia Friend by visiting the Dementia Friends Canada website, on Twitter , and on Facebook
