Prevention of chikungunya

There have been reports of heart and nervous system issues in older adults after vaccination with the chikungunya vaccine called IXCHIQ. At this time, the vaccine isn’t recommended for use in people aged 65 years or older. Health Canada continues to monitor the safety of the vaccine.

How can chikungunya infections be prevented?

If you are planning to travel to an area where chikungunya occurs, you should take the proper precautions.

Canada has approved the use of a vaccine for those travelling to destinations where chikungunya is present.

Preferably 6 weeks before you leave consult a health care provider or visit a travel health clinic to:

  • get personalized health advice and recommendations
  • determine if travel vaccines may be right for you

You can help prevent the disease by protecting yourself from mosquito bites, especially during peak biting periods. These occur just after sunrise and before sunset.
