Routine Practices and Additional Precautions Assessment and Educational Tools

The Routine Practices and Additional Precautions Assessment and Educational Tools (RPAP Tools) is a companion document to the Routine Practices and Additional Precautions for Preventing the Transmission of Infection in Healthcare Settings and the Hand Hygiene Practices in Healthcare Settings guidelines.

The RPAP Tools are designed for infection prevention and control professionals and those responsible for educating healthcare workers on infection prevention and control. They are organized into four separate tool sets as follows:

  1. Routine Practices Tool Set includes a summary of the elements of routine practices; an algorithm for a point of care risk assessment for appropriate use of personal protective equipment; and five case scenarios that illustrate the decision-making process relevant to routine practices.
  2. Additional Precautions Tool Set includes algorithms for syndromes or conditions requiring additional precautions and for stopping or changing additional precautions; checklists for the application of additional precautions in healthcare settings; a quick reference table listing the type and duration of additional precautions for some of the microorganisms commonly encountered in healthcare settings; and five case scenarios that illustrate the decision-making process relevant to additional precautions.
  3. Performance Checklists Tool Set includeschecklists for hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  4. Sample Program Tool Set includes sample session agendas and a summary of adaptations for different groups of healthcare workers.
