Measles & Rubella Weekly Monitoring Report - Week 13, 2017: March 26 to April 1, 2017
Key Points
- In Canada, 10 new cases of measles were reported in week 13, 2017.
- Two provinces have active measles cases: Nova Scotia (n=11), and Ontario (n=6).There are no active cases of rubella.
- A total of 26 cases of measles, and zero cases of rubella have been reported in Canada in 2017.
Epidemiological Summary
During epidemiological week 13, 2017, 10 new cases of measles were reported in CanadaFootnote 1. Seven of them, 6 from Nova Scotia and 1 from Ontario, are epi-linked with an index case, imported from India in Nova Scotia, which was reported and had rash onset during week 11. Three additional cases were reported from Ontario, one was imported from Pakistan and one from India, the third case has an unknown source of exposure.
To date in 2017, 26 cases of measles have been reported in Canada, resulting from 8 unique importation events. In Nova Scotia, one importation led to 6 secondary cases in February, and a second importation to 12 secondary cases, in two different provinces, since March.
No cases of rubella have been reported in 2017 (Figure 1). It has been 59 epidemiologic weeks since the last rubella case was reported (week 6, 2016).
